Hygiene-wise, there are three production systems in Vietnamese swine industry:
1. Small-scale production system – or households production scale: biosecurity and hygiene standards are low.
2. Medium-scale commercial farms (around 200 pigs/farm, see photo below): biosecurity and hygiene standards are just at minimum level.
These two systems account for 60-70% of pig heads and pork production capacity in the entire country.
3. Large-scale commercial swine farms: strict biosecurity and hygiene standards as a guarantee of farm benefits.
